Between plans? Don’t go without coverage.
BetweenPlans.com helps people who are between health plans due to job changes or life events compare short-term health insurance options (where available) and find a plan that fits their timeline and budget.
Availability can change year to year based on state rules and insurer participation.
Short-term plans may exclude pre-existing conditions and certain benefits. We’ll help you compare trade-offs.
How it works
1) Tell us your state + timeline
Short-term plan availability and limits vary by state. Start with a quick state check.
2) Compare plans side-by-side
We’ll focus on what matters: deductible, network style, prescription coverage, exclusions, and total cost.
3) Get connected to next steps
If you choose to proceed, we’ll route you to a licensed agent/carrier flow (where available).
State availability (quick check)
Short-term plans are not available for purchase in some states (and D.C.). In many others, they are available but can be time-limited.
Places where short-term plans are typically not sold
Commonly cited consumer resources list these jurisdictions as “not available” due to bans or insurer non-participation.
What to know before choosing short-term coverage
Not ACA-compliant coverage
Short-term plans aren’t required to follow ACA rules (like essential health benefits). Coverage can be limited.
Medical underwriting is common
Applicants can be declined, charged more, or have pre-existing conditions excluded.
Duration rules are in flux
Federal and state rules can change. We’ll confirm what’s currently allowed where you live.
- Alternatives may be better: ACA Marketplace plans (with subsidies), Medicaid/CHIP (if eligible), or COBRA may provide more comprehensive protection.
- Short-term plans can be useful if you’re healthy and truly need temporary protection during a gap.
Note: Federal agencies issued a 2024 final rule changing how STLDI duration/renewals are defined, and later announced they do not intend to prioritize enforcement of parts of that definition while reconsidering it. State law still governs what can be sold in your state.
